Location: Slidell, Louisiana

The Certified Pharmacy Technician is a well trained and highly motivated individual who performs the technical functions of a pharmacist. This person assist the pharmacists with medications order en! try, filling, and distribution. All work MUST be checked by a pharmacist prior to release to the floors or nursing units. The tech also is responsible for various clerical assignments such as, charging, crediting, and processing admits/discharges/transfers/prepackaging, filling Pyxis machines and proper handling of narcotics.

Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital’s strategic goals. Assists Pharmacists in medication order entry as necessary. Clarifies illegible orders with the Pharmacists. Alerts pharmacist of potential drug interactions, duplications or allergy concerns.

Initials and saves physician’s orders for Pharmacists to confirm. Accurately fills and labels all medications. Has a pharmacist check all work prior to delivery. Leaves on time for scheduled rounds.

Picks up discontinued or changed medications! as appropriate. Pulls meds from pharmacy and floors and credi! ts when patient is discharged. Delivers IV solutions and refrigerates as necessary. Ensures that patient’s medications are transferred to the correct location.

Accurately fills Pyxis machines using PARx System when appropriate. Accurately prepackages and follows established procedures. Makes IV rounds and completes IV worksheets. Returns IV solution to pharmacy as appropriate.

Makes changes on IV scheduling as appropriate. Prints batch labels as appropriate. Consistently demonstrates good aseptic technique in the preparation of intravenous and other sterile products. Demonstrates accuracy in compounding IV solutions and other sterile products.

Reviews all completed products with pharmacists prior to dispensing. Completes IV batches in a timely fashion. Reviews and maintains a working knowledge of USP Chapter .Verifies that ALL patient information is on charge sheets. Reloads all surgical Pyxis machine immediately and prepare paperwork for missin! g charges.

Places the refrigerated section of all exchange carts in the refrigerator immediately upon delivery. Verifies essential boxes are sealed on rounds to units. Replaces, charges, checks expiration dates of essential box medicines. Checks, and DOCUMENTS completion, on a monthly basis expiration dates on all stock areas assigned.

Processes all admits, discharges and transfers on a timely basis to keep U/D cassettes updated. Charges and credits medications in computer when necessary. Returns all credited drugs to stock by end of shift. Consistently uses the “Want Book” correctly by listing the item number, description, and quantity.

Maintains accountability of all items leaving the pharmacy including charging the patient or unit when applicable. Assists in performing biannual inventory. Assists in processing wholesaler order and stock shelves. Assists the coordinators and director with special assignments as needed.

Keep up will ! all out of stocks in Pyxis on all units. Performs other duties as assig! ned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Metric and apothecary systems of weight and volume measurement, brand and generic names of top 200 drugs, different dosage forms, Pharmaceutical abbreviations, unit dose theory and practice. One (1) year hospital pharmacy required but (2) years retail pharmacy experience, preferred.

High School Graduate or equivalent required. Licensure/Certification: Louisiana Board of Pharmacy Technician Certificate or Louisiana Board of Pharmacy Technician Candidate Registration.
