Duties and Responsibilities:

Audiology & Speech Pathology Clinic (Business Office)
of the
Overton Brooks VA Medical Center
.
As a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) you will serve as a Clinic Clerk and has a vital role in the daily operations of the Audiology/Speech Pathology Clinic. Patient care is delivered in a specialized setting which consists of Audiologists, and Speech Pathologists. As a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) you are assigned to the Audiology/Speech Pathology Clinic providing the administrative functions for an assigned panel of patients and works collaboratively with other members of an expanded health care team including pharmacists,
social workers, dieticians, beha! vioral health staff, etc. to provide a robust interdisciplinary approac! h to care.
Important interfaces and collaborations also occur with larger health care system providers including VA and non-VA specialists, hospitals, and diagnostic and treating facilities, and community based programs.
As a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) you
must use each interaction with the patient to validate and update patient demographic information, either in person or over the phone, to decrease the incidence of returned mail due to incorrect address and inability to contact patient by phone due to incorrect number. Explain the VA's mandate to collect insurance information to veterans, their families, and other eligible patients.
As a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) you will
collect, scan, and update health insurance information.
As a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) you
contribute to the revenue collection process by identifying parties with third party insurance. As front line contact with patents and! staff, incumbent sets the tone for perception concerning quality of healthcare services at the VA. When records are received, the
Medical Support Assistant (MSA)
will ensure all necessary health/administrative information is integrated into the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) by sending the documentation to scanning. The
Medical Support Assistant (MSA)
must screen/receive phone calls in a courteous and timely manner, determine the nature of requests and provide the information desired using privacy rules and established clinic processes.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
GS-5 Level - Four (4) years of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite may be substituted for the required specialized experience.
The above education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45-quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.
COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet the total experience requirements.
Only education in excess of the f! irst 60 semester hours (i.e.,
beyond the second year
) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
One full academic year of study (30 semester hours)
beyond the second year
is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
