No specialized experience or training is required. NOTE: Upon accepting employment, persons must be eligible for a work permit from the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. Before gaining permanent status with the agency, persons appointed to this position are subject to Chapter 9 of the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy regulations and are required to obtain a Pharmacy technician certificate from the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. To be eligible for certification an applicant must: Obtain a work permit from the LA Board of Pharmacy. Obtain 600 hours of practical experience in a pharmacy permitted by the Board. Pass a Board approved pharmacy technician examination. To be eligible for a work permit from the LA Board of Pharmacy, a person must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma.
PHARMACY TECHNICIAN 2:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a current Pharmacy Technician certificate from the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN 1-TRAINEE OR 2 Teaching Hospitals/Clinics School of Veterinary Medicine Louisiana State University Responsibilities: Clinical Services: Has working knowledge of human as well as veterinary medications, equipment (needles, syringes, catheters, blood administration sets, transfer sets, etc.), prescription pet diets and supplements (canine, feline, equine, food animal, exotics, etc.) and protocols; receives and reviews written practitioners' drug orders and/or irregularities; advises students of order/request adjustments to be made; directly interacts with clinicians/residents/interns concerning refill authorizations and medication orders (order signatures, medication order corrections, and proper signalment and directions); types label for prescription orders with clarity for clients to eliminate question in drug administration, translating Latin abbreviations to proper English grammar; receives outpati! ent telephone calls for refills on prescription orders; records all pertinent information on "All Purpose Request" form; checks for timely refill authorizations, process them for checking by pharmacist; reviews charts for refill information; identifies and determines "Knott's" test dates and results for heartworm preventatives; contacts area veterinarians for patient records; helps students calculate proper dosages, using electronic calculator and dispensing information from drug monographs; types labels and pulls drugs for prescription filling; calculates volume and weight to prepare intravenous admixtures (including some chemotherapeutic agents and allergy vaccines), ophthalmic medications, sedative adjuvants and other small volume sterile products; unit doses medications (oral, parenteral, and topical), labeling and logging the process according to legal requirements; compounds/reformulates medications (oral and topical); labeling and logging the process according to leg! al requirements. Administrative/Computer Services: Participates in bill! ing activities enters charges from "All Purpose Requestâ forms into Cornerstone program for appropriate pharmacy charges to clients; enters and posts charges from "Internal Transaction" forms into Cornerstone for Inter-departmental and research accounts; prices prescriptions with an appropriate mark-up and professional fee; retrieves the client demographic from computer system; packages/completes shipping forms for requested drugs and other dispensable items for mailing; knows proper packing and mailing procedures; acquires dry ice for shipping during the summer months; elects the route for shipping to accommodate mailing fees that serve as receipt to show shipping dates and routes; maintains record of items mailed; orders/requisitions selected biological such as vaccines, plasma, etc.; participates in physical inventory of all drugs, supplies, dry goods for end of fiscal year report; prepares controlled substance accountability sheets as required by law; maintains prescr! iption dispensing logs and files; investigates and reconciles discrepancies by seeking corrective action by the involved party(ties); directly supervises student workers. Position involves use of automation technology; stocking and inventory as well as purchasing services are essential functions in job; maintains the physical pharmacy, pharmacy storerooms, pharmacy satellite areas, and specialized pharmacy equipment in good and working order; purchases all pharmaceuticals, dry goods, and prescription diets used in the clinic and those prescribed to outpatients; has working knowledge of all pharmaceuticals, dry goods, and food (small and large animal) and their place of purchase.
